VICTORIA JORDAN Email and e-transfers: [email protected] Website: www.victoriajordan.ca I currently concentrate my artistic efforts working with acrylics and mixed media on paper, as canvases tend to pile up on all my surfaces, hindering my ability to move around in my space. Plus, paper allows me the freedom to play without worrying about the financial constraints of expensive canvases or the impact on the environment when I throw away the works I don’t want. It does weigh on my mind that acrylic paints and media are not particularly kind to the environment, so I try to be sparing when the opportunities arise.

While acrylics are my “go to” I have been working towards branching out and trying my hand incorporating oils and cold wax into the final layers. Paper usually doesn’t hold up well to many layers of paint and wax, so I’ve learned to incorporate artist panels and boards I find in packaging and shipping containers as grounds as well. I like the idea of taking something that would end up in a landfill as “rubbish” and turning it into something new. I do however use varnishes that are UV protected, and buy high quality sealants and lightfast paints.
I’m particularly interested in texture and colour and how they can be combined to make a truly original and unique piece of work. I try not to think about what I, or the Viewer would want to see in a painting, but rather I attempt to listen to what the piece wants to say with its own voice. This has led to a lot of ugly paintings! But also a lot of very original works that I
wouldn’t otherwise have made. Because of this intuitive approach, I never quite know where I’m going to land, nor if I will like the finished product! But it’s an exciting way to approach painting and gives me a refuge for exploration, innovation and excitement.
Some of my favourite Painters (in no particular order):
Gerda Lipski Carol Nelson Jenny Grevatte Kirsten Behme
Zdzislaw Beksinski Erika Wittenwiler Laura Radwell Robert Burridge
Egon Schiele Francis Bacon Gustave Klimt Henrik Skora
Lena Gemzoe Lori Mirabelli Jenn Gash Elli Milan
