NICKY DECORTE
Biography and Contact Info
Nicky Decorte is a self-taught artist of Dutch origin at ‘Art Studio Happy Cat' in St Thomas, Ontario. She is well-versed in portraits of people and animals, but her art often takes new directions when her creative sense tells her to move out of the box.
Nicky started at a young age with pencil, ink and pastels - largely in muted natural shades and black and white. A lot
of her recent work by contrast is characterised by her love of bright colours. Now that acrylics are no longer the underdog in the artist's world, that often considers oils the ultimate tool, her paintings are mostly done using slow drying open acrylic paints. She is also well-versed in working with watercolours and pastels.
Nicky’s first career was as photojournalist in The Netherlands. Since that time, she rarely travels without her trusted camera. She loves to go further than just snapshots and landscape images, using extensive wide-angle, long exposure and experimental techniques. She loves working on special artsy Photoshop projects, and is exploring the use of Artificial Intelligence to make recurring post-processing tasks more time-efficient. But in the end, when it comes to her photography, she prides herself on creating images in-camera rather than with extensive post processing.
As a relative newcomer to St. Thomas, Nicky enjoyed being a part of the 2025 Elgin County Studio Tour to get to know the local population. Her doors are always open if you are interested to see her art or her photography; all it takes is an email to book an appointment in order to visit the studio.

PHOTOGRAPHY
For the longest time, expressing herself creatively was linked to photography for Nicky
Decorte. After a 20-year career in photo journalism in Europe, her camera equipment is still
never far away. While her paintings are mostly born in her studio, her photography
originates largely from the outdoors. Over the years, she worked with acclaimed mentors
from National Geographic and several published photographers to expand her areas of
expertise.
In the past 23 years on the North-American continent, she won awards for street
photography in Philadelphia (‘Philly Photo Day’), event photography for the Seaport
Museum in Philadelphia and held memberships of the Philadelphia Zoo Camera Club and
the Philadelphia Photo League. Whilst living in Bermuda, she was a member of the
International Women’s Club and the founder of the Bermuda Photo Club. She also
volunteered as photographer and host during a tall ships event commemorating the 400th
birthday of the Archipelago.
The selection of photographs shown on this page is not priced, because print size, photo
surface, quality, matting and framing are important price-drivers, that will ultimately
determine the sales price. There is more to see on her website:
